You already know how to friend a stranger, broadcast yourself, or tweet what’s happening. Welcome to our digital egosystem. This exploration seminar will examine what it means to be a consumer and creator of digital information. Our goal will be to examine the knowledge base that renders one digitally literate, and discover the gaps that lead to illiteracy. Then, we’ll share what we learn with our community. Be prepared to explore the digital landscape, to experiment with digital tools, and to engage our community by sharing your learning.
At the conclusion of this seminar, students should be able to:
- Define and apply the concepts of current digital literacies.
- Understand and use social media tools to curate information.
- Model digital citizenship.
- Evaluate the ethical implications of digital communication on members of society.
- Select, organize, and present various documents in several media forms.
Readings & Materials
Readings for this seminar will be available online or on our Moodle site. In addition, students may purchase other materials during the semester including supplies for projects as designed by the student in accordance with the project requirements.
As a member of this course, each student is expected to:
- Participate fully in class by being present and contributing to ongoing classroom discussions in a meaningful way.
- Bring a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.
- Demonstrate respect for others and their views.
- Complete all inquiry projects.
- Complete the Knight School Digital Citizen Trainer Program.
- Engage with class members on joint projects as assigned.

Points will be allocated as follows:
Inquiry Projects: 600 points (60%)
Final Inquiry Project: 200 points (40%)
Information on inquiry projects will be given during our seminar meeting time. Please ask me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions for any of the assignments that we will complete.
Attendance is expected in this seminar. If you will be missing the seminar for any reason, let me know as soon as possible. If you miss, you are responsible for contacting a classmate to find out what work was missed. Excessive absences will result in failure of the course.
Always make arrangements with me as soon as you know about an upcoming absence. Arrangements for making up missed work must be made in advance. Assignments submitted late will not be accepted unless arrangements are made in advance.
